“You want to what?” Basuto pinned Olivia with a look.

Allen didn’t think the suggestion was so out there. After all, Pepper for sure wasn’t going into a dangerous situation. If anyone was, it would be a trained law enforcement officer. Which he no longer was.

Olivia shrugged. “We’re similar enough build. I can wear clothes like hers and put a hat on. I show up in her car, and I go in. All y’all are outside, ready to bust the door down and save the poor undercover officer at a moment’s notice.”

Basuto shook his head. “Jessica all over again.”

Officer Tazwell set her hand on her hip. “What’s that about Detective Ridgeman, Lieutenant?”

“Nothing.”

She eyed him and wandered back to her desk, where her partner—a guy Allen hadn’t met—stared at the computer monitor with reading glasses and those strings dangling behind his head to secure the specs.

A lot had changed in Last Chance County in the last few years. There were six detectives now instead of two. And a K-9 and his handler—the ones walking in right now.

Basuto lifted two fingers in a salute. “Officer Stuart.”

“Puppy!” Victory jumped up and grabbed the inside edge of the front counter so her body lay across the top.

“Whoa, kiddo.” The K-9 officer grinned.

“Can I pet your dog?”

Stuart said, “Do you know what a working dog is?”

Victory shook her head.

The K-9 officer glanced at Pepper. “Is this munchkin yours?” He pointed to the side, at Victory.

“Yes.”

Allen heard the tone in her voice and wanted to hold her hand. But what they needed to do was hash out the plan to go to Elijah so the police could detain him—and hopefully find Sage in the process.

“Is it okay if Titan says hi to her?”

Pepper said, “Yes. Thanks for asking.”

Officer Stuart headed to the front lobby, where Victory had been playing a game with the receptionist on duty.

Basuto said, “Okay, Tazwell. It works in a pinch, and we don’t have much time.”

“Thanks for the vote of confidence.” She hopped off the edge of the desk. “I’ll go do something with my hair.” She asked Pepper, “Is it okay if I drive your car?”

Pepper nodded.

Allen squeezed her hand. “If you have objections, it’s okay to voice them. But no one is okay with putting you in danger.”

“I know.” She held on when he’d have let go. “Can I at least be there and watch what’s happening?”

He nodded. “We can follow in my truck.” He glanced at Basuto, who had a look on his face. A look of I caught you. “We’ll stay out of your way.”

The lieutenant nodded, a grin on his face. “Sounds good.” He sent a side-glance at Allen’s hand holding Pepper’s.

Allen ignored him.

Basuto coughed. “So I’ll head out with SWAT.”

Pepper spoke with Victory for a second, and they headed out back to Allen’s truck. As they crossed the back parking lot, she said, “The police here have SWAT? I thought they weren’t that big of a department.”

“We still need an armored division for certain circumstances when the response is necessary.
